Problem
General Dynamics’ custom configuration management tool provided a data repository for capturing vehicle
variant mechanical and other data through vehicle development. The tool, while useful, provided a
number of shortcomings that greatly hindered Systems Engineering from seeing the data in a useful
manner consistent with their team responsibilities.
DRG Team Solution
The DRG team was initially tasked with creating a Microsoft Access solution that would utilize a series
of complex business rules in the development of a vehicle indentured parts tree that could be
accessed at any part, level or assembly. This solution incorporated a number of other features
outside the original specification in order to facilitate GD personnel. We delivered on time and
within budget to more than 100 desktops in GD’s Woodbridge facility. Later, we were contracted to
provide additional support on this project by taking the Access tool and converting it into a web
solution. The access client server interface was converted to an ASP.NET/Oracle web solution in
less than 2 months.
